Our dentists at Crystalline Dental provide root canal therapy to help protect your oral health and save your damaged tooth.

What is a Root Canal?

Root canal therapy, also known as endodontic therapy, is needed when a tooth’s nerve is affected by decay or infection. To save the tooth, the damaged pulp, nerves, bacteria, and any decay are removed, and the resulting space is filled with special dental materials, which it can also protect the tooth from future infections.

4 Stages of a Root Canal Treatment.

  • Stage 1: Diagnosing the Infected Pulp.
  • Stage 2: Getting rid of the Infected Pulp.
  • Stage 3: A new Root Canal Filling is Placed.
  • Stage 4: The Tooth is Restored.

What does root canal therapy involve?

A dentist or endodontist can do a root canal in one or more appointments. While the tooth is numb, a rubber sheet will be placed around it to keep it dry. An access opening is made on top of the tooth and root canal files are placed into the opening, removing the damaged pulp, nerve tissue, and bacteria. If tooth decay is present, it will also be removed. Once the tooth is cleaned, it will be sealed with either a permanent or temporary filling.

At the next appointment, the dentist will fill and seal the roots and inside cavity of the tooth with dental materials. They will also place a filling on top of the tooth to cover the opening. Almost all teeth that have root canal treatment need a crown (cap) to protect the tooth and prevent it from breaking.

Your tooth may still be sensitive after surgery, but it will diminish as the inflammation reduces and the tooth has healed. You will be given care instructions after each visit.
